Rhys James is a comedian and author who is about to release his first book, You’ll Like It When You Get There: A Life Lived Reluctantly.
It’s a full day off after drinking these days. At least one. The second day is also a struggle. I went to the All Points East festival on Sunday, so Monday was a write-off… and Tuesday was not ideal. This is how pathetic I am – I actually did a COVID test because I thought ‘come on, there’s got to be something going on’. So it is a struggle.
My drink of choice if I was going to the pub would be drink a Guinness but I’ll mix it up. I guess I’m a Guinness or Neck Oil guy. I don’t mind drinking alcohol on stage, but I would be more inclined to do that if I was doing a short set on a mixed bill gig than if I was doing an hour… mainly because I would just assume I would need a piss. I’ve got a pretty weak bladder.
Soft drink-wise, I’m currently extremely into Harry Brompton’s Peach Iced Tea. I can’t stop drinking that. I can’t stop. It’s replaced Lipton. Lipton’s out, Harry Brompton’s new in town. My pre-show drink would just be water probably. Occasionally if I feel a bit low energy it might be a full fat Coke but then you’re burping the whole way through. So it’s water or even coconut water.
I don’t want to sound pretentious but I do sometimes drink Pocari Sweat. It’s like an ion drink that rehydrates you quickly – it’s probably just full of loads of sugar but it was something I used briefly as a hangover cure. People I know have one after they go for a run but it’s quite a good way to just get a bit of energy that is not fizzy before going on stage.

Rhys’ new book ‘You’ll Like It When You Get There: A Life Lived Reluctantly’ is out now. Tour tickets are available here.
