I’m really competitive at games. Competitive to the point where we actually had to stop playing when I was younger. We literally stopped playing as a family because there would be proper rows. There was a Trivial Pursuit incident when I fell out with them for several hours over a Dixon of Dock Green answer. It still gets brought up now. Even if I play stupid games with the kids, they get really annoyed with me. Even when it’s just Cards Against Humanity and it’s not even about winning, I care so much about winning. It’s really bad.
I do play mobile phone games, but I’m a bit sick of them at the moment. I used to like Temple Run when I was on the London Underground because that would always get you through a couple of stops. Dangerous though; if the train jolts, everything goes wrong, so it was really starting to get on my nerves.
I’ve just got a new one called Block Crush that sort of chased me around on Instagram. I only downloaded it yesterday, you know when you see it on an advert and you know you have to play it. It’s like Tetris, but with more realistic blocks. It doesn’t beep or ping or have neon lights on, it’s like an analog version of a phone game. It’s really satisfying, I just love it.
I’ve never got into Football Manager. I just can’t because I know it would take over my life. And it feels like a lot. My mum was carrying my nephew’s iPad and he had a football game on there, she accidentally hit something with her thumb and spent £40m of his transfer budget. I’ve never seen a seven year old boy so angry, she spent a fortune on some player he didn’t want. It’s a dangerous thing.
